All signatures should include the typed or printed name of each signer in or adjacent to the signature block. We will return any Aircraft Registration Application, AC Form 8050-1 that does not include the printed or typed name of the signer.
The Federal Aviation Administration accepts documents containing digital signatures by email. The documents may be submitted electronically as an attachment to an email at 9-avs-ar-electronic-submittals@faa.gov. Documents signed in ink must be submitted by U.S. Post Office or commercial delivery services. Effective January 23, 2023, if your registration certificate expires after this date, the registration certificate will automatically be extended an additional 4 years.
A new certificate with the new expiration date will be sent to you.
Aircraft with an expired registration, airworthiness certification is considered ineffective. Without registration, the aircraft is not authorized for flight. Once registration is restored, the airworthiness certificate not having been surrendered, revoked or terminated would become effective again provided the aircraft is otherwise compliant with maintenance, inspections, and any other requirements for an effective airworthiness. The Registry started automatically reissuing certificates, for aircraft in valid status on January 23, 2023. All aircraft in valid status with expiration date January 31, 2023 – December 31, 2023 are extended an extra 4 years. We intend to reissue registration certificates affected by this Rule, no later than November 30, 2023. The certificate will be mailed to the address in our records. The Registry will no longer issue letters of extension, effective January 23, 2023. The FAA revised 14 CFR 47.31(c)(1) removing the time limit within which the FAA must either issue a letter extending the temporary authority to continue to operate or deny the application. The Aircraft Registration Application (“Pink Copy”) is valid until the applicant receives the aircraft registration certificate, application is denied by the FAA, or 12 months have elapsed during which the registration is pending on the aircraft.

On the day of your scheduled visit, check-in at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, Visitors Center. A current state- or government- issued photo ID is required to confirm your visit and receive a visitor's pass. If your arrival will be delayed by more than two days, you must reschedule your visit.

Certain surplus military aircraft are not eligible for FAA airworthiness certification in the standard, restricted, or limited classifications. Since you can't fly civil aircraft unless it's certificated as airworthy, you should discuss this with an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector ( ASI ) at your local Flight Standards District Office ( FSDO ). This person can advise you on airworthiness certification procedures. An additional source for advice on amateur-built and surplus military aircraft is the Experimental Aircraft Association ( EAA ), located in Oshkosh, WI . You can reach them at (414) 426-4800.

Stolen aircraft should be reported to your local law enforcement agency. Ask that they report the theft to the National Crime Information Center, as this will initiate notifications to the appropriate government offices. If enough time has passed that the return of the aircraft is no longer expected, the owner should write to the Aircraft Registration Branch requesting that the registration for this aircraft be canceled. The request should fully describe the aircraft, indicate the reason for cancellation, be signed in ink by the owner and show a title for the signer if appropriate.
The U.S. received the "N" as its nationality designator under the International Air Navigation Convention, held in 1919. The Convention prescribed an aircraft-marking scheme of a single letter indicating nationality followed by a hyphen and four identity letters (for example, G-REMS ). The five letters together were to be the aircraft's radio call sign. Read more about N-number history.
