Chancellor Angle delivered his annual 2022 State of the University Address last Friday afternoon. The outdoor presentation at the Chamberlain Field Pavilion marked the first in-person State of the University address since COVID-19 struck in spring 2020.

The Homecoming Court was introduced to the crowd as part of Saturday night’s halftime festivities at Finley Stadium, culminating in the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen—Isaiah Owens, a theatre major and Innovations in Honors student, and Delali Gadzekpo, a vocal music education major and Brock Scholar.
Another pair recognized during halftime were seniors Emory Benson and Cornisha Barnes, the recipients of Public Service Awards from the UTC Alumni Board of Directors and the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. They were selected for displaying the most distinguished service to the UTC campus and the Chattanooga community.
The UT Promise tour visited the Chattanooga metropolitan area last Tuesday, making stops at Cleveland High School and Central High in Harrison. Chancellor Angle joined UT System President Randy Boyd in meeting with high school juniors and seniors and talking about the availability of UT Promise.
The Central High School event included the announcement that a Chattanooga law firm is making a $1.2-million gift to the UT Promise Endowment to support graduates from 12 Chattanooga-area high schools attending an undergraduate UT system campus.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and Lucy White, assistant director for education and suicide prevention at the Center for Wellbeing, has been busy coordinating programming geared toward mental health and suicide awareness while educating people about resources, professionals and different organizations that can help them if there’s a mental health emergency.
This week’s events include:
WUTC-FM 88.1 is Chattanooga’s NPR station, proudly broadcasting from the UTC campus and bringing the city and the Tennessee Valley essential, irreplaceable and found-nowhere-else news reporting, dialogue and entertainment. Individual listener contributions provide the great majority of funding for WUTC, and the station’s Fall Pledge Drive kicks off Friday (September 23) and continues through September 30. Every gift makes a difference, no matter the amount, and every headline, story, song and program you count on from WUTC is enabled by your support.

Jason Riley will be visiting campus on Thursday (September 22) for a discussion titled “Why Thomas Sowell Matters.” The event, which will also include a book signing and reception, begins at 5 p.m. in the University Center’s Tennessee Room. The event, open to the public, centers on Riley’s book “Maverick: A Biography of Thomas Sowell.”
Attendees are requested to RSVP for the event. Those who register will get Riley’s book, “Maverick: A Biography of Thomas Sowell,” while supplies last.
Meet-up for Researchers is an opportunity to network and share your research interests and projects with other UTC faculty, staff and students. The next event is Friday (September 23) at the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Mapp Building.

UTC’s bi-annual Bloodanooga Blood Drive, in collaboration with Blood Assurance, is taking place September 28 and 29 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the University Center’s Tennessee Room.
Blood donors will receive free food and an 80s Rock ‘n Roll themed t-shirt. As an extra incentive, all donors will be entered into a drawing to win an Apple Watch and a pair of AirPods. A single blood donation will save three lives in our community. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another successful event.
Read To Achieve, UTC’s campus-wide reading program, needs your help selecting the title for the 2023-2024 school year.
The Read to Achieve Steering Committee seek’s a book that offers accurate and respectful portrayals of diverse cultures and identities; relevance to first-year students, current society, and/or our local community; possibilities for additional programming, especially inclusion in first-year courses or other areas of the curriculum; at a reasonable cost (less than $20) and manageable length (around 200-300 pages). If you know of a book that would make an excellent choice, please submit your ideas.

Every year, UTC honors staff and faculty with service awards recognizing employees for reaching milestones in five-year increments. Last Tuesday, 193 faculty and staff were recognized for reaching significant service totals at the UTC Service Awards Annual Luncheon. The honorees included Heather Grothe, executive secretary in the Department of English, who is celebrating her 45 th anniversary at UTC. Three others have reached the milestone figure of 40 years with UTC: Michael Parham in repairs and maintenance, Chief of Police Robert Ratchford and Department of Music faculty member Rebecca St. Goar.
The Tivoli Foundation has partnered with the UTC Division of Diversity and Engagement with a special deal for their upcoming show, Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, o ffering UTC students, faculty, and staff $30 (plus fees) tickets for seven of the performances taking place between October 4-9 at the Memorial Auditorium.
The Undergraduate Admissions Office will be hosting the annual Blue and Gold Preview Day for prospective students and their families on Saturday, November 5. We anticipate hosting over 700 prospective students and their family members on campus for this event. Blue and Gold Preview Day includes a tour of campus, an academic department fair, a student organization showcase and a residence hall open house. Click here for a link to the online registration.
This is our largest on-campus recruitment event and is successful, in part, due to the many UTC faculty and staff that attend and help show our guests the opportunities available to them as a member of the UTC community. The Honors College invites faculty members to attend an Honors Teaching Happy Hour at Barley Taproom and Cocktail Bar on Thursday (September 22) from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. You will be treated to food and drink as you mingle with other faculty members and brainstorm topics for interdisciplinary, team-taught courses. This is a great opportunity to meet colleagues and perhaps come up with an exciting new course to teach.
The Department of Chemistry and Physics continues its seminar series on Friday (September 23) with a visit from Daniel Baker, a member of the University of Memphis Department of Chemistry. The seminar will take place in Grote 411.
The Department of Political Science and Public Service is hosting an information session for students interested in the Tennessee Legislative Internship Program next Monday (September 26) at noon in the 540 McCallie Avenue Building (Room 462D). The program provides Tennessee students with an opportunity to work and learn in a hands-on legislative environment. HOLA UTC and the Honors College are hosting a Latino student panel in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Come hear the stories, insights, anecdotes, challenges and successes from 12 UTC Latino students during Meet, Greet and Learn: Mi Experiencia at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, in the Guerry Center Reading Room.
On October 1, the American Heart Association is having its annual Heart Walk to fundraise for cardiovascular research and lifesaving equipment. The Heart Walk will occur at Coolidge Park from 9 a.m.-noon. There will be different fun stations along the “trail” and it is kid and dog friendly.
